wicked.. I have all the right qualifications to work there!

Pool : 6 years of training
s.pool : 15 years of swimming
making funny looking idea maps: 10 years
Eating gourmet food : only 2 years of practise , but i am very motivated to improve my skills in culinary delights

I want to have the position of mad scientist (no science , just vague ramblings) or the position as "google bum"
Yes and my fee is one million dollars . mo ha ha , and the same goes for my dog "nikita" , she should only eat kaviar and goose liver prepared in a tower... with some decoration of some sort.

Well sorry stock market also is lots of profit for Google... I think... As well as a few software packs - though they're all bargain... Lemme see... What else brings profit... Well it's the best (even though not flawless - search for "GOOGLING".. On google, of course) search engine it MUST have some profit after all...

In the end that's a very good question there, Michael - Where's all that profit coming from? We all know publicity is a never ending source of profit, but I also know about some calculations about Google profit that were saying they earn a few cents per search query... I don't really know where that money comes from but I surely know there's no coin slot in MY PC... I'll try to find out. I'll bookmark this one and I'll return with an answer. Or something better than my last post...

What they are taking is not money. What they are taking is employee time. Employees WANT to work there, and want to work there LONG HOURS. Why not? Everything you could want is right there. They try to make it a home. I for one, would rather actually have my OWN home. It's worth the money for Google to do this. The return on employee commitment is HUGE.

Yes, I knew the adsense stuff. But there must be MORE :) And it's just as I expected: [excerpt from Wikipedia]

"Financing and initial public offering

The first funding for Google as a company was secured in the form of a $100,000 contribution from Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, given to a corporation which did not yet exist.[23] Around six months later, a much larger round of funding was announced, with the major investors being rival venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital.[23]

Google's initial public offering took place on August 19, 2004. 19,605,052 shares were offered at a price of $85 per share.[24] Of that, 14,142,135 (another mathematical reference as √2 ≈ 1.4142135) were floated by Google and 5,462,917 by selling stockholders. The sale raised $1.67 Billion, and gave Google a market capitalization of more than $23 Billion.[4] The vast majority of Google's 271 million shares remained under Google's control. Many of Google's employees became instant paper millionaires. Yahoo!, a competitor of Google, also benefited from the IPO because it owns 2.7 million shares of Google.[25]

Google's post-IPO stock performance has been very good as well, with shares surging to $500 by 2007, due to strong sales and earnings in the advertising market, as well as the release of new features like the desktop search function and personalized home page.[26] The surge in stock price is fueled primarily by individual investors, as opposed to large institutional investors and mutual funds.[26]

The company is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol GOOG."

I was reading the post and it occured to me that they are just trying to boost their return from their employees. But what worries me is that the people will try to work such long hours that they won't get any family time in.

Most of us are in the Prison, @ work setup, well Google's one prison I could work @.

Just in case you ever get these two environments mixed up, this should make things a little bit clearer.

IN PRISON……….you spend the majority of your time in a 10X10 cell.
AT WORK…………you spend the majority of your time in an 8X8 cubicle.

IN PRISON………you get three meals a day.
AT WORK……….you get a break for one meal and you have to pay for it.

IN PRISON……….you get time off for good behavior.
AT WORK…………you get more work for good behavior.

IN PRISON………the guard locks and unlocks all the doors for you.
AT WORK………..you must often carry a security card and open all the doors for yourself.

IN PRISON……….you can watch TV and play games.
AT WORK…………you could get fired for watching TV and playing games.

IN PRISON………you get your own toilet.
AT WORK………..you have to share the toilet with some people who pee on the seat.

IN PRISON………..they allow your family and friends to visit.
AT WORK………….you aren’t even supposed to speak to your family.

IN PRISON………all expenses are paid by the taxpayers with no work required.
AT WORK………..you get to pay all your expenses to go to work, and they deduct taxes from your salary to pay for prisoners.

IN PRISON……….you spend most of your life inside bars wanting to get out.
AT WORK ………..you spend most of your time wanting to get out and go inside bars.

IN PRISON…….. .you must deal with sadistic wardens.
AT WORK…………they are called managers.

[quote}Who exactly is Google overcharging to spend money so frivolously? In a competitive / fair market these excesses are not realistic. Sorry to be a bummer, but they are obviously taking a LOT of money from someone?[/quote]

google dont overcharge anyone they just get so much money in ads cause there ads get shown on millions of computer screens a year. what company wouldnt pay to have there ads on google search and on so many websites?

I'll bet that on your first day there, they serve you a nice big glass of Google Kool-Aid.

I have read all the comments...Spent 40 years doing building contracting where I made little money but I was the boss...That said the best 2 comments was from Kari above...She has life figured out better than she knows in fact...Best of luck to you Kari...

Someone else can not plan out your life's ups and downs for you...Never give up control to others without really understanding what it will cost you...My 4 cents...

Looks like the next Enron (or WorldCom). Don't get me wrong, the idea is really appealing. It's like the new vision of utopia for the 21st century: a job that you love to go to.

A while back I worked for a very cute/wonderful/earthy/fun/family company. They too tried to make the workplace a happy home for all of us. Ultimately, they failed. Eventually the bottom-line won out (or at least the numbers that represent the immediate bottom-line won out). Today, that same company that was so awesome seven years ago is a stale company with poor moral. They're having trouble simply treading water.

Besides, it doesn't really take a rocket scientist to look at all the Google PR and recognize that something's wrong with their presentation. They've grown extremely rapidly--with few results to show for all the expansion (most of "their" new innovations come from other companies they've purchased; how many Google products can you think of that have made a splash since they went public?). It appears to me that they've become a monolithic company where relatively nothing gets done. They have tons of money, lots of talent, and no focus.

Their PR department is working overtime trying to keep their image intact and consistent, and keep people from realizing that Google's "success" is just another mirage.

In a year or two--or three or four--we'll all be reading about how Google got too big for its britches; how the users/stock holders believed so strongly in the company (that it could do no wrong) that the company started to believe it too, and completely lost its grip on its own success. Google appears to me to be--sadly enough--a one (or two) trick pony.

The future isn't comprised of massive companies like Microsoft (or Google), but instead of much smaller, flexible, mobile, innovative, and focused enterprises.

I fear for the fallout when Google goes down. They've had their day, just like Yahoo (and Lycos, and Netscape, etc.) had theirs.

Like Enron and Worldcom, Google has attracted excessive investor interest because it's selling what the world wants most: hope and dreams. Everyone wants to make a quick buck and a sure thing.

Step 1. acquire beets.

Step 2. Fight the bear that comes to eat the beets.

Step 3. claim your prize of "job at google".

Step 4. profit?

Dan,
Google as a company make no money from their stock price going up. The individuals who own shares can make money that way. You're right about the IPO though.

Google might make a more attractive place to work if the focus weren't on jailing employees at the office but rather encouraging creative and flexible ways for employees to work remotely from one or more locations.

I can get over the self indulgence everywhere else but a lifeguard for one swimmer? LOL

Also, I would hate swimming in an Everpool with some guy watching me. Whatever.
